DESCRIPTION:
The course "Biological Effects of Xenobiotics" is focused towards defining the concept of xenobiotics and their biological effects. The terms bioavailability, bioconcentration, bioaccumulation, biomagnification and biotransformation of pollutants are explained in detail and precisely defined. The molecular pathways and mechanisms of xenobiotics entry, metabolism and removal from living systems are described. An overview of the most important groups of pollutants, their physical and chemical properties and biological activity is given. The sub-lethal effects of xenobiotics on the macromolecular level, cell organelles/structures and cells/tissues are considered in detail. The mechanisms of toxic and genotoxic effect of contaminants are described and results of the latest scientific research in marine organisms (invertebrates, fish) are discussed. During the lectures - thematic units, the effects of physical ( - and UV rays, free radicals) and chemical contaminants (PAHs, PCBs, pesticides, heavy metals, estrogen, artificially synthesized nanoparticles and structures ...) on DNA (different types of damage), the induction of mixed function oxidase (CYP) and phase I and II enzymes, the multi-xenobiotic resistance (MXR) mechanism, the induction of metallothioneines, oxidative stress, immune response, apoptosis, heat shock proteins (HSP), the modulation of the endocrine system (induction of vitellogenin), inhibition of acetylcholinesterase activity, and effect of manufactured nanomaterilas as indicators of exposure and biological effects of pollutants at the molecular and cellular level are studied.
