The Faculty of Natural Sciences in Pula (FPZ) directs its scientific activity toward fundamental and applied research of biodiversity and processes in the Adriatic Sea, the human impact on marine ecosystems, and finding new approaches to the conservation of the sea and the management of marine biological resources. Research is carried out within national and international scientific and professional projects, among which are projects funded by the Croatian Science Foundation and EU projects from the FP6, FP7, LIFE, Interreg programmes, and others.
Scientists at the Faculty investigate diversity and processes in the Adriatic, from the gene to ecosystem level, focusing on species that are ecologically and economically significant. Additionally, indicators and threatened groups of organisms are researched, such as large marine vertebrates, fish, coral‑building communities, and marine flowering plants. Part of the scientific activity focuses on understanding cumulative human impacts, including changes in microbial community dynamics and trophic webs, the influence of invasive species and climate change in the sea, and the ecotoxicological effects of pollution, including nanoparticles and microplastics.
Current research topics and the multidisciplinary approach to the issues of diversity, endangered status, and protection of marine ecosystems are reflected in the scientific production and the relevance of scientific papers published in leading international journals. Research projects carried out by the Faculty’s scientists provide a foundation for actively engaging students in scientific work. Through the preparation of final theses and the joint publication of research findings, students are able to deepen their interdisciplinary knowledge while gaining practical skills and research methodology in the field of marine science. International cooperation through ERASMUS and CEEPUS programmes is also encouraged, enabling exchange of knowledge and experience for both staff and students.
