Why Choose the Undergraduate Marine Science Program?

Seas and oceans are essential for life on Earth. They regulate the climate, participate in biogeochemical cycles and the flow of energy in the biosphere, provide food and numerous resources, and play an important role in transport and tourism. Our excessive pressure on the world’s seas, coastal development, and climate change have threatened the biodiversity and stability of many marine ecosystems, including the Adriatic.

To understand the complex processes in the sea and to develop new, sustainable approaches to its use and conservation, experts with diverse and interdisciplinary knowledge are needed. By integrating oceanography, marine biology, biotechnology, and the protection and management of marine ecosystems, such experts are educated through our undergraduate university program Marine Science, a program unique within the wider university environment.

Who Is the Marine Science Study Program Intended For?

If you are interested in:

  • oceanography and want to understand the processes that shape marine ecosystems,
  • marine biology and the diversity of life in the sea,
  • how seas and oceans influence and shape life on Earth,
  • the state of marine ecosystems and the impact of climate change,
  • marine biological resources and biotechnology,
  • the protection and sustainable management of marine ecosystems, and
  • marine science, ocean research, and diving,

and if you have completed a four-year secondary education, then Marine Science is the right study program for you!
More information about admission requirements, the application process, quotas, and deadlines can be found here.

What After Completing the Program?

If you don’t yet know exactly what you want to be “when you grow up” after finishing secondary school — don’t worry, you’re not alone. It is often during university studies that we discover what we want, or even more importantly, what we don’t want in life. So, here’s a piece of advice: study what you love! That is the best way to enjoy your time at university and to be satisfied and successful in what you study.

The job market is changing faster than ever before, so today’s “secure professions” may no longer be considered secure a few years from now, when you complete your university education. However, if you are good at what you study — and you will be good if you love what you study — there is a high chance you will continue your professional career successfully, regardless of which path you choose after completing your undergraduate studies.

Alongside professional knowledge, the Marine Science program will teach you how to think critically and solve practical problems, as well as how to handle new situations and challenges — and these are precisely the key elements of success in a rapidly changing job market.

After completing the program, you receive the degree of Bachelor of Marine Science, which enables you to continue your studies in a graduate/master’s university program. A higher level of education can open new possibilities for advancing your professional career or pursuing doctoral studies, and most of our students choose to continue their education at the graduate level, either in Croatia or abroad.

A Bachelor’s degree in Marine Science also provides opportunities for employment in technical and organizational positions related to research, monitoring, and the sustainable management of marine ecosystems and the environment, within economic, public, and regulatory institutions. There is also an increasing number of opportunities for (self-) employment through EU-funded projects in non-governmental organizations, which today play a key role in implementing European environmental and biodiversity conservation policies.

The integrated EU policy for the protection of coastal and marine areas, together with the EU Blue Growth strategy, forms the backbone of the European Union’s sustainable development agenda, with European seas — including the Adriatic — at its core. The shortage of experts in the interdisciplinary protection and management of marine ecosystems has been recognized as one of the main challenges in implementing EU policies. Therefore, the Marine Science study program is the right choice — join us in researching and protecting marine ecosystems!
