Workshop Description
Marine biologists and oceanographers are studying complex processes and addressing important conservation issues, such as global primary production, conservation of charismatic marine megafauna and overfishing. In the last two decades, significant developments were achieved in quantitative data collection of remotely sensed environmental data, animal movements and anthropogenic activities impacts. This has led to the abundance of quality data sources, but also require the use of specialized analytical tools and approaches, that are rarely included in common statistical software (i.e. SPSS). In addition, a significant lag exists between the development and use of analytical tools and their inclusion in training of future marine scientists. This workshop will introduce students to the open source programing language R and demonstrate its use in marine research and conservation.
Requirements
The workshop is intended primarily for students in the senior year of bachelor study programs in marine biology, marine science and related fields with basic knowledge of statistics. Participants must bring their own laptops and preinstalled R and RStudio programs. Download of R-software is available at http://cran.r-project.org/, while RStudio can be downloaded at http://www.rstudio.com/. Installing tutorial for both programs can be found at https://learnr-examples.shinyapps.io/ex-setup-r/#section-install-r.
